KDE 4.0-alpha1: still a proof of concept
You should know by now: KDE 4.0-alpha1 "Knut" was released on May 11.
I've downloaded the openSUSE "KDE Four Live" CD that features it (it's KDE-Four-Live.i686-0.1.0.iso, redirecting to a list of mirrors; MD5: 029d80aeb4d0fc15c27a06f4f74ed1d5; user: linux, password: linux), and I tried it, hoping it's really more advanced than KDE 3.80-3 to bear the Alpha1 status.
It is not that advanced.
I am not impressed by anything. Maybe the KDE 3.5 project is something that started too many years ago to be:
(1) ported to a new Qt;
(2) cleaned to match the KDE Human Interface Guidelines;
(3) enriched with completely new application and features;
(4) completely redesigned under the hood: Oxygen, Plasma, Decibel, Phoron, Kross, Solid; in a such small amount of time.

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |

It's Early Alpha1
Will KDE 4.0 be ready by October 31st? I've had doubts myself, and I've been guessing December 31st.
I think KDE 4.0 will be very good. KDE 4.1 should be wonderful. The new Qt tools are much improved, and KDE 4's speed will reflect this.
I think Beranger may be overly pessimistic about KDE 4's development--or maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part. At any rate, I think it's too early to tell.
