New WLAN stack for Linux 2.6.22
About a year ago a number of developers of Linux WLAN drivers and interfaces decided to switch from the IEEE80211 to the Devicescape WLAN stack. Now the latter, after being extensively reworked, improved and renamed mac80211, has managed to become part of the developer kernel, out of which in about six to eight weeks time Linux 2.6.22 is scheduled to emerge. A few days ago the developers had already included the new WLAN configuration interface cfg80211, which was developed in parallel to the new WLAN stack and which the stack relies upon. The new drivers are apparently meant to use cfg80211 in place of the Wireless Extensions, hitherto employed for configuration purposes.
The current state of development does not, however, offer users the hoped-for improvements in Linux WLAN support.
