pclinuxos passes ubuntu
In the midst of the Ubuntu/Dell hype, PCLinuxOS has passed Ubuntu in hits per day on Distro Watch.
The rise in PCLinuxOS's popularity could be due to the Windows-like look and feel, or the recent final test release of PCLinuxOS 2007.
The PCLinuxOS community also manages the PCLinuxOS Magazine, which includes PCLinuxOS and Linux-related articles; although, there also exists a community-driven Ubuntu magazine, Full Circle.

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |

Justice starts to be served (hopefully)
This is only the beginning.
After 2 years and a half of continuous hype and no significant improvement (IMO), Ubuntu is finally being left behind among Linux novices.
Though a distro junkie and on my way to reach an advanced level of proficiency with Linux, i am sticking to PCLOS permanently since late 2004.
Reasons? It inherits and enhances what Mandrake brought a few years ago over Readhat: GUI usability, a centralized/unified control panel which is not desktop sensitive, careful selection of packages (superbly maintained) and the best tool to manage them, Aptitrude. Everything on my Thinkpad is detected, configured and kept working out-of-the-box.
A pity that Ubuntu and derivatives enjoys so much mainstream media limelight. It just hurts the reputation of desktop Linux as a whole.
Had PCLOS the same cash flowing in to promote the distro and M$ would have at last some serious contender to be concerned about.
Cash? Maybe lack of it is why PCLinuxOS is so good...
At least I feel comfortable to discuss PCLinuxOS's distrowatch rating here, as this site is used by users of a number of Linux distros. So beating the drum for one distro may result in other benefitting if it prompts people to go and click buttons at distrowatch. Discussing this at the PCLinuxOS site, on the other hand, could be interpreted as drumming up votes.
I'm not sure whether PCLinuxOS at #1 is a good thing. No doubt that it's deserved, but with such status comes responsibility. Can it ever be a distro that Texstar "just put together for his friends" again?
There is no doubt that PCLinuxOS has, since late 2004, constantly raised the bar with regard to user-friendliness. How common is the installable live CD now?
Anyway, I don't begrudge Ubuntu being the distro used on Dell computers. Fine. It's a very good distro. It's got big financial backing, and it can cope.
What it will never have that PCLinuxOS does, is a leader who stays very close to the community, and really goes the extra mile for the new user, nor will it have a small tight team of developers and testers who remain focussed on the product, and don't have to worry about the bank balance or release schedules.
And I think it's that sense of focus, and the relationship with users, which has pushed a small distro, created in a guy's home in Texas, with help of a bare handful of packagers dotted around the world, to where it is today.
But, honestly, I wouldn't read too much into Distrowatch rankings.
