My thoughts on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn
So with all the excitement about the new release of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn I decided to give it a shot. While I am a big fan of open source software and my servers are usually nix boxes I have tried a couple times and gave up (once was redhat, the other was mandrake 9). Ubuntu is touted as having the best out of the box experience so I figured I would give it a try. The timing was perfect and I was able to pass the Linux on the desktop decree with little or no opposition.
Reasons for giving it a shot:
* Its free.
* I have a laptop that I use primarily for my dev so the home machine is what my girlfriend uses for web surfing and normal productivity uses Beryl.
* I wanted to see what the hollabaloo was about the effects Beryl brings to linux.
* Mold a new mind. While my son is a mere 10 months I think the OS we start him off on could be a big changing point. So if we could get into the habit he will.
* It is in line with my technology goals.
I won’t go into details of the processing of setting up but I will just list the raw pros and cons.
Also:
I upgraded my desktop from Ubuntu Edgy to Ubuntu Feisty yesterday. I did a manual upgrade. I took a backup of my sources.list file and then changed all occurrences of Edgy with Feisty.
