Web Watch: Soul searching
Soul searching: A creative intelligence is at work behind the scenes at soulbath.com. This is an intriguing interactive site in which you enter a world of abstract animation and rhythmic electronica. It’s unpredictable and mysterious, and will require some patience to figure out what to click on and navigate through. Strange things will flash at you, and questions will require answers, but bear with it as it takes you for a ride. Prepare to create your own experience. Watch and hear what happens, for example, as you drag, or rather conduct, your cursor around the 6-by-6 grid on the main page. And if you find it, the “non-interactive Pong,” one of a series of simple and odd animations that pop up over the looping, spacey-dreamy soundtrack, will entertain your “lonely CPU.” Underlying the site is a philosophical argument against technological commercialism. A banner-ad slogan declares, “The banner is the enemy.” And the overall tone, enhanced by the gray design, whispers dread and decay in an era of “digital disturbance.”
