9/11 'JET' For Sale on Ebay
A creep posted an Internet ad claiming to be selling a piece of American Airlines Flight 11 - one of the planes that struck the Twin Towers on 9/11 - for close to $200,000.
The purported seller, who said he came from Adelaide, Australia, posted an auction for what he described as "a piece of turbine blade . . . re covered from a building roof top, 0.5 miles from the attack site" on eBay on Tuesday.
The starting bid was $194,650.
The posting - by someone with the eBay handle "jamesp4894" - had no photos of the item.
No potential bidders stepped up. But 175 people accessed the page - an unusually high number of hits for an unadvertised item over that period of time.
EBay pulled the morbid posting within 48 hours after receiving complaints.
The posting included the following description:
"I came into possession of this piece of history after a relative who works in this building, found it months after the attack.
"I have kept it for this long as it was a piece of the aircraft that was transporting a very close family friend on this fateful day."
"It's news to us," his son Dominguez said. "It doesn't surprise me though. The whole event was so surreal, nothing surprises me.
The seller did not respond to multiple e-mails for comment.
"There is evidence that points to it being fake, like the guy living in Australia, but the story is not so far-fetched. So, the answer is, I don't know," said Rick Law, producer of the 9/11 Memorial Project in Los Angeles.
In other eBay news:
The Kansas City Star is reporting, "For small companies that purchase certain types of used equipment on eBay, the San Jose, Calif.-based online auction company is offering up to $20,000 in insurance protection. The program covers buyers of capital equipment, such as bulldozers, in specified categories for purchases made in the United States."
