OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 “Mercury” Released, This Is What’s New

  • OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 “Mercury” Released, This Is What’s New

The OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 operating system has been officially released as the latest and greatest version of this RPM-based GNU/Linux distribution that keeps the Mandriva and Mandrake spirit alive.

Coming eight months after the OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 release, OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 is dubbed “Mercury” and features many of the newest GNU/Linux technologies and Open Source software. Among these, we can mention the recently released Linux 5.5. kernel, KDE Plasma 5.17.5 desktop environment, and LibreOffice 6.4 office suite.

Probably the coolest thing about OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 is the fact that it ships pre-loaded with a new, in-house built utility called Desktop Presets (om-feeling-like), which lets users customize the appearance of the KDE Plasma desktop environment to look and feel similar to other popular operating systems.

A Surprise!

  • A Surprise!

Today, my daughter wanted to play some Steam games and, since we were in my home office, I let her use my laptop. I booted OpenMandriva Lx and dragora showed me that there were some updates. I had updated the machine like a couple of weeks ago, so I thought the process could wait until after the game.

My daughter played and, afterwards, I saw that the updates were massive: more than 1800 packages!

I decided to install the updates, but nothing was going on.

  • Going to a Super Bowl LIV party? You should replace Windows with OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 Linux distro on the host's computer!

It was just a few days ago that we shared with you a release candidate was released for OpenMandriva Lx 4.1. Well, things apparently went very well, as today, you can download the final release! Today is Super Bowl Sunday though -- surely people should be relaxing and watching the big game instead of messing around with Linux, right? Sure, if you enjoy football. If you don't like the sport, don't torture yourself. Instead, turn off the TV and install this new version of OpenMandriva!

Hell, if you are invited to a Super Bowl party today, you should not only bring with you snacks or beverages, but a flash drive containing OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 too -- you can then install it on your host's PC. If they are running the unsupported Windows 7 in particular, you would be doing them a huge favor.

Steam client crashing on OpenMandriva Lx 4.1

  • Steam client crashing on OpenMandriva Lx 4.1

I downloaded and installed OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 and the OS looks good.

The main problem with it right now is that Steam is not working properly: even though the client starts, downloads updates and unpacks the Steam runtime, it crashes right before login.

There was not much I could do about it. Apparently, this problem has already been reported.

OK, the OM Lx 4.1 release is upon us and the repositories have been created and are ready for users. This requires a “dnf disto-sync” not a “dnf upgrade”.

  • OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 with Linux 5.5 is out, here’s what’s new

Over this past weekend, the OpenMandriva Association announced the final release of OpenMandriva Lx 4.1, codenamed Mercury. The release announcement comes just days after the candidate release of the popular Linux distribution.

For those new to OpenMandriva, it is a fork of Mandriva Linux 2011. Development of the Mandriva Linux distribution discontinued in 2011, with most of the Mandriva development team joining the Mageia Linux, another Mandriva Linux fork, development team. The majority of the remaining Mandriva Linux development team allied with community members to form OpenMandriva.

  • How To Install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9 - idroot

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, MongoDB is a high-performance, highly scalable document-oriented NoSQL database. Unlike in SQL databases where data is stored in rows and columns inside tables, in MongoDB, data is structured in JSON-like format inside records which are referred to as documents. The open-source attribute of MongoDB as a database software makes it an ideal candidate for almost any database-related project. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MongoDB NoSQL database on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

  • Self-host a Ghost Blog With Traefik

Ghost is a very popular open-source content management system. Started as an alternative to WordPress and it went on to become an alternative to Substack by focusing on membership and newsletter. The creators of Ghost offer managed Pro hosting but it may not fit everyone's budget. Alternatively, you can self-host it on your own cloud servers. On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.
