  • SuperTuxKart 0.10 Release Candidate 1 released

    The next release of SuperTuxKart is almost ready! The first release candidate is now available for testing. Now is the time to help us test the game to find any last-minutes bugs to fix.

    Since the beta-1 release, numerous bugs have been fixed. Obviously, as previously, the biggest feature is that networked multiplayer is now ready for general use, so enjoy multiplayer games over LAN or over the net!

  • SuperTuxKart has a new release candidate out for 0.10 with online support

    The SuperTuxKart team have been busy since releasing a beta back in January, with a release candidate now available.

    The biggest change for this release, as noted in this previous article, is support for playing against others online or across a LAN. It's been a long time coming and certainly makes SuperTuxKart a lot more modern!

    Since the beta release, they've worked to solve numerous bugs and they now consider the online features "ready for general use". That's not all though, they've replaced the old mansion track with an upgraded Ravenbridge Mansion and the Black forest add-on is now part of the official track-set to race on.

  • The EU is going after Valve and others for "geo-blocking", a statement from Valve

    It seems Valve and five publishers have attracted the attention of the EU, as they claim they're breaching EU competition rules. In particular, what the EU say they're doing goes against the "Regulation 2018/302" introduced on December 3rd last year.

    The statement from the European Commission, available here, mentions that they've sent Statements of Objections to Valve and Bandai Namco, Capcom, Focus Home, Koch Media and ZeniMax.

  • The open source livestreaming and recording software OBS Studio has a new release out

    Here's something fun for you content creators this weekend, as OBS Studio just released a fresh build for you.

    It's worth noting though, the service integration for Twitch and others is still not available in the Linux version. This is where you can sign in, to get access to features from services directly in OBS to make things easier. Last I heard, they still needed to fix the official browser plugin to actually get the integration working. There are some pull requests open on that (like this and this) so hopefully soon!

  • Wine 4.6 To Support A Shared Wine-Mono, Reducing Disk Space & Other Benefits

    Beginning with next week's Wine 4.6 development release, this program for running Windows games/applications on Linux/macOS will now support a shared Wine-Mono installation rather than requiring this open-source .NET implementation to be installed per-prefix. The benefit of this change is reducing the disk space if you keep around multiple Wine prefixes and likely a speedier creation of new prefixes.

  • GODOT 3.2 WILL GET PSEUDO 3D SUPPORT IN 2D ENGINE

    Godot support for 2D is already mature and most of our users enjoy working with it. There is, however a growing trend of adding 3D layers to 2D games, which can be seen in successful titles such as Hollow Knight or Rayman Origins.

    This is possible because the engines in which such games are made are actual 3D engines using 2D planes. In the end, doing this is possible but it requires understanding and being familiar with how 3D engines work.

  • Godot 3.2 Picking Up "Pseudo 3D" Support For Its 2D Engine

    With the open-source Godot game engine's 3D engine and 2D display efforts both panning out well, the developers are working to combine the two a bit to offer "pseudo 3D" support for those using the cross-platform engine for 2D games.

    If you are looking for some kid-friendly Linux gaming this weekend, SuperTuxKart 0.10 has reached release candidate maturity with its LAN/Internet multiplayer support.

    SuperTuxKart 0.10 premiered in beta back in January with initial networking support to allow WAN/LAN racing against others. After all these years of SuperTuxKart development, v0.10 is bringing the long-desired multiplayer support across networks.

    With SuperTuxKart 0.10 RC1, the networked multiplayer support has matured a lot in these past few months.

  • SuperTuxKart 0.10 RC1 Arrives with Improved Online Multiplayer Support

    Being a big fan of the open-source racing game SuperTuxKart, I was stoked to see a new release emerge at the weekend.

    SuperTuxKart 0.10 hit beta back in January, debuting online multiplayer support. This week the team issued a new release candidate build for further testing, bringing the famed game a step closer to a new stable release.

    SuperTuxKart 0.10 RC1 features a number of minor gameplay and performance improvements, especially to the online multiplayer experience, plus a couple of notable track updates.

    Nintendo is the king of the "Kart Racing" genre. While there are many imitators -- some of which are very good -- Mario Kart remains the best. And no, it is not just about mascots, although it does help having Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong and such. Actually, the real magic is the gameplay -- solid controls and well-designed levels. The Mario Kart franchise is consistently excellent.

    The problem? Mario Kart costs money and, emulators aside, only works on Nintendo consoles. If you want to get your kart racing on, but you don't want to open your wallet, you are in luck! SuperTuxKart is an excellent clone of Nintendo's game, featuring popular open source mascots. Best of all, the open source game is not only cross-platform, but totally free! The upcoming SuperTuxKart 0.10 will even introduce network multiplayer play, and now that version has reached Release Candidate status. And yes, you can download and play SuperTuxKart 0.10 RC1 now!

Ubuntu Leftovers: Blobs, Snapcraft and Arronax

  • Ubuntu 19.10 To Bundle NVIDIA's Proprietary Driver Packages As Part Of Its ISO
    For Ubuntu 19.10 the developers are adding the NVIDIA driver packages onto the ISO. The NVIDIA binary drivers won't be activated by default, but will be present on the install media to make it easier to enable post-install. The open-source NVIDIA "Nouveau" drivers will remain the default for NVIDIA graphics on new Ubuntu installations, but this change is positioning the mainline and legacy NVIDIA proprietary drivers onto the Ubuntu ISO so that they can be easily obtained locally post-install. The main driver here is allowing users to enable the NVIDIA proprietary graphics on Ubuntu even if you don't have an Internet connection. NVIDIA has already okay'ed the distribution of their driver packages with the Ubuntu ISO.

    The Valve developers maintaining their Proton fork of Wine for use by Steam Play have outed a new update, version 4.2-5.
  • Wine & Mingw-w64 Might Tighten Up Their Relationship - Possible "WineSDK"
    Developers between the Wine and Mingw-w64 projects are discussing the potential for further embracing their relationship given the overlap in trajectory and both benefiting from close collaboration. This extended relationship could also involve Mingw-w64 potentially adopting Wine's branding. While all Phoronix readers should be aware of Wine, for those not familiar with Mingw-w64 it's the off-shoot of MinGW focused on 64-bit support and other features over the original MinGW for providing an open-source development toolchain for Microsoft Windows. Mingw-w64 remains quite active in working on its GCC-based compiler toolchain support for Windows.

  • IRKALLA, an incredibly stylish looking pixel-art tactical-action platformer is coming to Linux
    The developers behind IRKALLA emailed in today and it grabbed my interest right away with the supremely stylish art behind it. The odd setting has my curiosity too, with mechs versus demons! According to the developer, it's a "platform-tactic game" so it has elements of an action platformer with character progression and some form of base defence building. IRKALLA has been in development for quite a few years now with their TIGForum post dating all the way back to 2013. We've been emailed today, as it seems development on it has been picked back up as they told me it's "finally coming together" and a Linux release is also confirmed of course.
  • Roguelike fantasy adventure 'Vambrace: Cold Soul' has a new feature trailer ahead of release next week
    The release of Vambrace: Cold Soul on May 28th is getting close now, it's quite an impressive looking game that I've been playing and they have a new feature trailer. I won't say too much on it myself before release but since I've had access for a while, I can say it works great on Linux.
  • Surreal adventure game 'ZED' about an artist suffering from dementia is releasing in June
    ZED, a game that will tell the story of an artist suffering from dementia from Eagre Games and Cyan Ventures now has a release date and it's quite soon. The Windows version is now scheduled in for June 4th, with the Linux (and Mac) version to be "later in June". Great to see it continue to be confirmed and although there is a delay, it's not going to be long it seems. Good thing too, as I'm damn excited for this one.
  • art of rally is bringing a stylized racing experience to Linux later this year
    Funselektor Labs, the developer of Absolute Drift has announced their latest game, art of rally. It might look stylish but it's not just a pretty face, as the developer is also focused on how the cars handle too. While we have a few racing games now like Grid Autosport, DiRT Rally/4 and some F1 games (plus a few that work with Steam Play), they're all quite serious business. art of rally looks to be taking a slightly less realistic focus while still providing a challenge, especially with the top-down view you get a better picture of what's up ahead.

GNU Guile 2.9.2 (beta) released

We are delighted to announce GNU Guile 2.9.2, the second beta release in preparation for the upcoming 3.0 stable series. See the release announcement for full details and a download link. This release extends just-in-time (JIT) native code generation support to the ia32, ARMv7, and AArch64 architectures. Under the hood, we swapped out GNU Lightning for a related fork called Lightening, which was better adapted to Guile's needs. Read more
