Parade of Penguins before 'Happy Feet'
Marching penguins, dancing penguins and, next year, surfing penguins. We're surrounded by the little critters, but they're not justa Hollywood creation --they've been popular culture fixtures for years. Among them:
"PENGUIN ISLAND" (1908): Satire by Anatole France for which he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The plot: A foolish old priest comes upon an island populated by penguins; he's so nearsighted that he thinks they are people and baptizes them. A crisis breaks out in heaven as God must decide whether penguins have souls.
TENNESSEE TUXEDO (1963): Animated character on CBS show "Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales." Voiced by comedian Don Adams.
TUX THE PENGUIN (1994): Created by Larry Ewing as a logo for the Linux open-source operating system.
