Alternative office suites or productivity environments are not new. Versions from several vendors have been available for a long while. Though the uptake of these have been restricted to very niche environments or organisations that are run by technology concerns, they remain in the market offering viable choices to everybody in general.

For an SMB, many of these suites make great sense since they can prove to be much more cost effective than the popular proprietary suite. But they also come with their challenges. Eitherways, its worth a look at what’s on offer.

When it comes to alternate suites, organisations have a pick of vendors. But without a doubt one of the most popular or well known one is Sun Microsystems’ Star Office suite.

The Libreboot C201 from Minifree is really really really ridiculously open source

Open source laptops – ones not running any commercial software whatsoever – have been the holy grail for free software fans for years. Now, with the introduction of libreboot, a truly open source boot firmware, the dream is close to fruition. The $730 laptop is a bog standard piece of hardware but it contains only open source software.
