In Memoriam: Ralph Griswold(1934-2006)
Ralph Griswold, creator of SNOBOL and Icon, former staff member at Bell Labs and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Arizona, died 4 October 2006, losing a bout of cancer.
Ralph attended Stanford and graduated with a bachelor's in physics and a master's and Ph.D. in electrical engineering. He went to Bell Labs in 1962 and became head of Programming Research and Development in 1967. He left to become the first Professor of Computer Science at Arizona, headed the Department until 1981, was named Regents' Professor in 1990, and retired in 1995.
Ralph was a splendid language designer and a great teacher. I am certain that the entire community joins me in expressing sympathy to Madge and their son Bill, also a computer scientist.
