Java on Linux vs MS-Win XP

Just talk

The computer lab we were using at Western Oregon University had Windows XP on all the machines. The first day of class, I used Win-XP for a few minutes--but I just couldn't stand it anymore . . . I whipped-out my PCLinuxOS CD I'd brought along with me, and proceeded to install Linux on the machine . . .

Discovering Linux - The Experiences of a Linux Newbie

The concept of open-source, free software is very appealing. Many of the Linux-distros are very good, but I still haven't found one that fits my needs perfectly. Also, my needs will propably change as I become more aquainted to Linux. At this time, my favourite distro is propably Mandriva One, though it would've been Ubuntu if they had had support for restricted formats.

Hurts when vista boots you in the DRM's

With Microsoft building a lot around HDCP, DRM into vista and most LCD panels not supporting it, what will be the upgrade cost? Not only will I have to change the two new 20" goggle boxes I've just bought, I'll need to change the graphics card too.

Quick Guide to Securing a Lamp Server

Howtos

In the last few years on the Internet the price of dedicated servers have went down and more people are beginning to use them for their sites, game servers, or small hosting companies. With this comes as I was talking about in my last article inexperienced admins. Lots of people I spoke too are too intimated by the linux shell and try to administer their server completely from the control panel.

Well I signed up at the site after I seen they posted on of my howtos which I am thankful for. It was the one on the grsecurity patched kernel. I think it should help quite a few people as there are so many local root exploits out now and most distro's security and dev teams are doing nothing about it.

Selling the dream

it took a long conversation, many demos of Kubuntu (it's still on the laptop, week 4 now! Whey!) and many beers to let me in with a proposed demo to pitch against his MS setup. A mini network, a couple of users from each team, typists, accounts, orders, processing etc. If it works he'll take it on, if not, then nothing has been lost but my time and a stupid bet involving being Naked, Guinness, vindaloo, traffic cone and a stop watch.

Phoronix offers some criticism of KDE software, and this is how KDE deals with it

About a month ago, Eric Griffith posted an article on Phoronix where he compared Fedora’s KDE spin to the main Fedora Workstation which uses GNOME. In that article, Eric described a number of issues that he became fully aware of when comparing his favorite desktop environment, Plasma (and the KDE applications he regularly uses) with GNOME’s counterparts. I read that article, shared it with other KDE designers and developers, and we came to the conclusion that yes, at least some of the issues he describes there are perfectly valid and clearly documented. And since KDE does listen to user feedback if it makes sense, we decided we should do something about it. Read more
